Great news for plantain fans: we’ve created a cultivar that’s head and shoulders over the others for cool season growth.

 

And if you think that sounds exciting for the environment as well as for livestock production, you’re right.

 

Captain CSP (cool season plantain) is one of our newest releases and comes after years of breeding, plant selection and rigorous trial work by our R&D team.

 

This new plantain was bred especially for cool season growth, to provide more feed when it is most needed on farm, and to enhance the nitrogen-leaching mitigation capabilities that extra growth at this time of year brings.

 

(N-leaching mainly happens when soils are wet through late autumn, winter and early spring.)

 

Captain CSP is the best yielding commercial plantain in our trials over the cool seasons of autumn, winter and early spring.

 

It is also a top-ranking variety in overall DM yield, boasting excellent summer DM production.  

 

Use it for a finishing crop or in a pasture mix; it suits both red meat and dairy systems.

 

Captain has shown good persistence in mixed sward trials. Well managed it will survive for 3 years.
